"Know Thyself"

While I regularly recoil when I hear such a phrase as "Know Thyself", I will oblige for the sake of this post. My original characteristics (that I thought were worthy of mention) are listed below.
1. Unique Heritage - My mom is from Holland, and my father is from India.
2. Life Experiences - My mom is a lawyer, and my father is a doctor. I've worked a variety of odd jobs, such as lawn work, pet care, file clerk, and event planning.
3. Problem Solving Skills - I thoroughly enjoy fixing and solving people's problems.
4. Gift-Giving - I am quite good at giving personalized gifts that portray thought and care.
5. Encouragement - I love to encourage people given the right circumstances.

To summarize the responses I received, I delineated them below.
- My roommate, Kylie, said that I am very detail oriented and that really shows up in my ability to give good gifts. Because I pay attention to small details and words that people say, I am able to compile that information and use it productively.
- Natalie, my other roommate, spoke differently. She said that I am very emotionally intelligent, which I use to understand others well and help them understand themselves, and went so far as to say that sometimes it seems I know her better than she knows herself.
- My father said that I am very compassionate and use that to be a better communicator. I empathize with others and use my own personal experiences to better understand others.
- Abby, my best friend, said that I am knowledgable in many areas, and that I go the extra mile to educate myself on topics which I have not learned in the course of mainstream education. She also mentioned that I am an effective communicator due to a long history of working with others, and that I am a determined employee and have a strong work ethic.
- My mother focused mostly on my ability to communicate and relate to others. She at one point called me a chameleon referring to my ability to fit in and blend in anywhere.
Here's the link that plays a small portion of their responses:

I don't believe that there are many differences in the above two sections. It seems as though I portrayed myself well. To conclude, I think that some of the people I interviewed are correct about me. For example, Abby and my father really hit the nail on the head. However, my mother and Natalie seemed to detail things about me that I would not see myself as. I don't often see myself as a "chameleon" or knowing others in any truly deep form. If I was to include any one person's response in my list, I believe that I would remove the "encouraging" characteristic and replace it with "detail-oriented" as it seems that I am far better at amassing data about people than truly providing novel encouragement to anyone.

  1. Hey Elly,
As an entrepreneur, it is a good trait to be caring or like you said "gift giving." This shows compassion towards your work as well as creating a bright mood in the work place for future employees. Experience is also another and one of the most important things to have so to hear that you have worked multiple jobs is definitely a good start and often leads you to a full time job down the road. I too think I am a problem solver as it constantly annoys me if something is wrong under my own building or circumstances.

  2. Maeghan,

I think from your post alone that you seem to be a down to earth person. I think your attention to detail, and your gift giving personality traits will help your business succeed tremendously. I think those characteristics will be able to garnish a wonderful culture, and attract people to what you’re selling. A lot of people enjoy businesses that seem to offer a personalized experience, and I think you can offer your customers that experience and in turn help your business. Thank you for sharing.
